Social Stories
A social story is a personalized, visual narrative designed to help people understand social situations, expectations, and appropriate responses. These stories are often used to support children with autism or social communication difficulties - but all children can benefit from them! Social stories can address a wide range of topics, including self-care, social skills, academic tasks, and coping with changes or unexpected events. From visiting the doctor, starting school, or going to the fair - each situation can have a unique social story made to help children prepare for the event.
At Hand-in-Hand Neurodiverse Care, we help create inclusive environments. That means that we’re not looking to “fix” a specific child; we’re looking for ways to create an environment where all children feel safe and social. Sometimes creating social stories for the whole classroom is a way that we can support one specific child. We create stories that tell non-neurodivergent children how to play with their neurodivergent peers; we normalize different communication styles, different play skills, and different ways of being. When children understand why their peer is different than them, they are more likely to accept them and build social skills.
